Face-focused Orthodontics

If you were forced to choose between having a beautiful face or beautiful teeth most people would choose a beautiful face. Unfortunately, many currently employed orthodontic techniques actually cause facial deformities. One of the most common orthodontic techniques that leads to facial deformities is bicuspid extraction orthodontics. This technique is commonly utilized when there is over-crowding of the teeth or there is a jaw-to-jaw relationship problem. While extracting bicuspid teeth is an easy way to create needed space to align crowded teeth it can have devastatingly adverse effects on facial aesthetics. This orthodontic technique often creates more space than is required to straighten the teeth and also causes unstable orthodontic results; but even worse, it causes a narrow smile, poor lip support, long and narrow face and premature aging. In cases of jaw-to-jaw relationship problems where bicuspid extraction orthodontic techniques are utilized the consequences are even more debilitating, including compromised facial aesthetics, TMJ Dysfunction and sleep apnea.

No doctor should ever move a tooth; much less extract a tooth, without understanding the consequences to facial aesthetics, airway health and TMJ health. Dr. Lockhart is passionate about improving facial aesthetics through orthodontic and orthopedic procedures. He believes that straight teeth should enhance facial beauty, not compromise it.

Many of Dr. Lockhart’s orthodontic patients are actually former recipients of bicuspid extraction orthodontic treatment who were dissatisfied with the results of this type of orthodontic treatment. Their most common complaints are: “I look older,” “My face looks long and narrow,” “I hate my narrow smile,” “My nose looks bigger,” “My lips are smaller than they used to be,” “I can’t see my teeth when I smile,” “I get constant headaches,” “My tongue doesn’t fit in my mouth,” “I snore now but didn’t before my braces,” “My jaw joint clicks after having braces.”

The logical question might be asked, “Why would any doctor utilize bicuspid extraction orthodontics if it causes so many adverse consequences?” The simple answer is because that is how they were taught. Fortunately, Dr. Lockhart was taught by an extremely progressive orthodontic mentor more than 25 years ago who believed that there had to be a better way. Dr. Witzig discovered a better way and made it his life mission to teach as many doctors as he could a better alternative to bicuspid extraction orthodontics. Dr. Lockhart’s good fortune was having the opportunity to study under this innovator so that all of Dr. Lockhart’s orthodontic patients enjoy the benefits.

What are the benefits of face-focused orthodontics? First of all, a patient does not have to endure the trauma of extracting four healthy teeth and enjoys the benefits of those four additional teeth the rest of their life. They also enjoy broad, beautiful smiles. They have healthier TMJ’s, a healthier airway and increased facial aesthetics. Straightening teeth should ALWAYS enhance facial esthetics and NEVER compromise facial beauty.
